We use different tools depending on the ease of integration with the various part of our business: We use Square for mobile payments. We use Shopify for B2C. It is not as great for mobile solutions but is easy to plug in. Braintree's rate-wise can be less expensive.

We use Square, but we don’t really process that many credit cards. We had a credit card account once, but it was so expensive that we had to cancel it.

Square - Best Credit Card Processing Tools for Startups

Square is a payment processor that specifically handles payments where customers are physically present. Square offers a number of different card readers, including one that plugs into your smartphone and a stand that turns your tablet into a mobile register. Once you sign up for a reader and an account with Square, the service connects all of your data to a reporting dashboard that can help you manage your employees, inventory and send online invoices. Square also offers business “kits” designed for specific industries, like restaurants and retail. For example, one of their restaurant kits includes a magnetic stripe reader, a wi-fi receipt printer, printer paper, and a cash drawer.

How startups use Square?

Square’s products are all built around ease of mobility, enabling you to set up shop anywhere at any time. This lends itself particularly well to earlier-stage startups that are more mobile and flexible.

How much does Square cost?

Square’s payment processing charges a 2.75% transaction fee for any card, online store or invoice payment. For any payments that are manually entered, it charges 3.5% + $0.15. For its card readers, Square charges differently. The magnetic stripe reader that plugs into your phone or tablet is free, including free shipping. A similar reader that also possesses square chip reading costs $29, while Square’s tablet stand costs $99.
